  • New Summer Foundation for a Radiant Matte Finish

After trying a few new base products (plus incorporating a favourite from July) I’ve discovered an amazing combination that gives me a radiant matte finish that lasts All. Day. Long. The winning combo? L’Oréal’s new Pro-Glow foundation with Laura Geller’s Balance-N-Brighten powder foundation. I’ve been using the L’Oréal Infallible Pro-Glow foundation in 203, applied with a damp beautyblender. This foundation oxidizes quite a bit — I tried three different shades before finding one that matched me, and even still I’m not so sure it’s perfect.

  • July Favourites: Grass Is Greener Edition

I can’t remember the last time I was in the US for long enough to visit Target and Ulta, so you can imagine my glee when my family decided to take a road trip to Chicago to visit my cousins whom we hadn’t seen since my wedding almost three years ago. In the intervening years, Target has come and gone in Canada; Shoppers Drug Mart has begun stocking NYX, and the brand has opened a number of standalone stores. H&M Beauty has massive displays in flagship locations, Toronto has its own MUJI, which carries lovely skincare staples and beauty accessories. Yet it’s still near impossible to get certain coveted brands and items in Canada. I,…

  • Coming Soon: Bite Beauty Multisticks

Before I jump into catching you up on my July life, I thought I’d happily inform you of this exciting upcoming release from BITE Beauty. I’m a long time fan of BITE’s fantastic lip products — they’re creamy, pigmented, and long-lasting. Their Amuse Bouche line features an extensive shade range that include classic nudes, reds, and berries, but also unexpected shades like forest green, grey-lavender, and navy blue. I’m a huge fan of BITE’s holiday value sets, (I’ve purchased all of them over the years) and I’m looking forward to the opening of their Lip Lab in Toronto. It should come as no surprise, then, that I can’t wait for the release of their Multisticks. Multisticks feature a cream-to-powder matte formula and…

  • Review – Boxycharm in Canada

UPDATE: Click here to read my 6-month review of Boxycharm.  When I posted last month about Boxycharm coming to Canada, I wasn’t convinced that subscribing to the beauty box was worth it. But so many people have ended up on Plateau Beauty searching for information on the Canadian Boxycharm experience — I decided to sign up so that I could post a review of the service. This isn’t a review of products in the box, since for the purposes of this post, the particular products are irrelevant — this review is for Canadian customers who may be considering subscribing to the Boxycharm beauty box.

  • Bold, Bright Summer Lipsticks

Wearing a bright lip isn’t always easy for me, but if there’s ever a time to just go for it, summer is it. I poked through my comically oversized collection of lip products and pulled out six of my favourites for summer, which range in colour from red to orange to fuchsia. I was surprised that I didn’t reach for any liquid lipsticks, since I love how long wearing they are. I think it’s because even the most comfortable liquid lipstick can’t beat out the comfort of a lipstick or lip crayon. In the heat, comfort is king. I loathe fussy lipstick, and can be shy when it comes to colour. Here are…

  • Easy Way to a Natural and Subtle Sunless Tan

I recently discovered a foolproof way to get a natural and subtle sunless tan. As a pale gal, I like using self tanner on my body in the summer months, just to… take the edge off. I always protect my skin with sunscreen while out in the sun, so I rely on sunless tanners if I want a bit of a tan. My goal isn’t to deepen my skin tone dramatically — I just like to add just a hint of colour. Here is my 2-step method for getting an ultra natural looking sunless tan that will last just as long a traditional sunless tan. What you’ll need for subtle, sunless tan Exfoliating mitt or cloth…

  • Disappointing Shopping Experience – PÜR Cosmetics

When Ebates had their amazing 15% off deal last month, I jumped on the chance to try out a couple of beauty retailers that I had never ordered from before. PÜR Cosmetics was definitely at the top of my list — their Moonlight Glow Strobe Palette was calling my name. I ordered the strobe palette and a limited edition correcting primer (which is no longer listed on the PÜR site). Despite my high hopes, shopping on the PÜR website left a lot to be desired and, sadly, so did their products. Canadians should keep in mind that while PÜR does ship to Canada (and rather quickly at that) their prices are listed and processed…

  • Bronze Liners: NYX, Smashbox, Marc Jacobs

Battle of the Bronze – Marc Jacobs Highliner Dupes

Bronze liner is what I turn to when I want to add a bit of smokiness to an otherwise minimal eye. It’s warmer and softer than black, and provides enough definition to elevate the look without taking it over the top. I recently purchased the NYX Retractable Eye Liner in Bronze, and when I got it home I realized that I have two nearly identical colour dupes: Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Kohl Liner in Penny Lane, and Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon in Ro(Cocoa). These three liners are so close in colour, and each at a different price point — I decided to put them to the test.
